Looking Forward

January 12, 2017

The start of the new semester is just around the corner and it's an excellent opportunity to reflect back on our progress over the past semester. Because of your support through the Thousands Strong campaign, we are closer to reaching our campaign goals.

  • We are over halfway to reaching our goal of 13 additional Ally sessions through four classroom presentations, one Greek Ally, and one session each on the Tulsa and HSC campuses. In total, 511 staff, students, and faculty have participated in a version of LGBTQ Ally.
  • Our LGBTQ Ally 2.0 session is scheduled for April. We are excited about offering new content to seasoned Allies.
  • The Lunch and Learn sessions covered new territory through the workshops Loving Your Queer Body and Career Planning for LGBTQ Students
  • Take a moment to watch our video on the LGBTQ Ally Meet & Greet held last semester, see the positive force of our community welcoming new LGBTQ students to campus.

On behalf of our office and the community we serve, thank you for your generous support of our efforts. We are looking forward to another impactful semester.

Warmly,

Kathy and Kasey

We Did It!

September 10, 2016

The quote from Margaret Mead on the back of our LGBTQ Ally t-shirt is, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." This campaign to raise money to expand our LGBTQ Ally Programs embodies that sentiment. Together, we raised close to $11,000, smashing our goal. We had 195 donors from all over the country, from students, to family members, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. This act of coming together to support these programs, and our LGBTQ students, is an act of love.

We cannot wait to start developing the LGBTQ Ally Refresher for the Spring semester. In-class Ally sessions have already begun, our Tulsa and HSC campuses have scheduled training programs, and our first Lunch and Learn is scheduled in two weeks. We will use these resources wisely to work towards our goal of creating a more inclusive campus for ALL students.

Thank you for believing in what we are doing here at the University of Oklahoma and the Gender + Equality Center and for donating to this campaign.  We look forward to updating you on our progress over the course of the next year.

With appreciation,

Kathy and Kasey

Thousands Strong Excited!

September 06, 2016

Dear Donors and Supporters,

We are beyond thrilled to report that we have met our goal of raising $9,000! This is due to the amazing support of our alumni, friends, family, staff, students, and faculty, who believe that what we are doing though LGBTQ Programs is making a difference on OU's campus. Thank you for donating, sharing, and offering words of encouragement and excitement.

So, let's celebrate that together, we made this happen and, in the words of one of our Project Champions, Erin Simpson, "let's see if we can get to $10,000 before it's over!"  We have five days left in the campaign, $10,000, here we come!

In gratitude,

Kathy and Kasey

95% and GROWING!

September 02, 2016

We are a week away from the end of the LGBTQ Programs Thousands Strong Campaign with 95% of our goal! Thank you so much, as we obviously could not have done this without all of your generous support. Though we are not at 100%, we know we will reach our goal of $9,000, and then some, by the September 9th deadline. Please continue to share our Thousands Strong Campaign with your friends and family. You have no idea how much that helps!

With our current momentum, we expect to exceed our goal of $9,000. In anticipation of that, we have already started conversations with our LGBTQ Program Advisory Board, a group of undergraduate and graduate students charged with creating programs for our OU LGBTQ community, on what initiatives we can create and grow. Here are some ideas we would love to see happen this year:

  • Bring in a nationally recognized LGBTQ guest speaker
  • Develop a pilot program focused on LGBTQ peer-mentorship
  • Grow our annual LGBTQ Progressive Dinner to once a semester, rather than once a year
  • Create more LGBTQ campus awareness campaigns

There are so many opportunities for our LGBTQ students and overall campus community. Please help us continue our growth!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Kathy and Kasey

Week One Smashes Expectations!

August 15, 2016

Good Morning,

We are overwhelmed with the amount of support for the LGBTQ Programs Thousands Strong Campaign.  Raising $3,000 in the first week goes beyond our expectations.  Our LGBTQ Program Advisory Board had their planning retreat on Saturday, and after a visit to the new Wheeler Ferris Wheel, they got serious about planning LGBTQ events for our campus.  Knowing how much support we have in the community and on campus, energized the group and increased the excitement level 10-fold.  Thank you to everyone who has donated so far.  We want to keep the momentum going so we can smash our goal, can you help by keeping this campaign in the social mediaverse?  Please take five minutes to:

  1. Share our Thousands Strong pagehttps://thousandsstrong.ou.edu/project/2576
  2. Share the video on social media: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-GIydKB6Y8

We can't wait to continue to update you and celebrate how together, we are making OU's campus even better.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Kathy and Kasey
