Buddy Bench Book
What is Buddy Bench?
The Buddy Bench originated in Germany but was brought to the United States by a young boy named Christian, from York, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the bench was to eliminate loneliness, prevent bullying, and to foster friendships on the playground. A physical bench is placed on a playground and designated as the “Buddy Bench.” If a student is feeling lonely, they can go sit on the bench alerting other students, who are then encouraged to be mindful of including everyone on the playground. Over the past several years, Human Relations Students at the University of Oklahoma have developed a curriculum to teach young elementary students the concept of inclusion, kindness, and anti-bullying using the Buddy Bench. We have taught this curriculum to over 3,500 students at five elementary schools in the Norman area.
What are we doing?
This semester, we are looking to take this curriculum even further by publishing a children’s book which will be donated to over 1,000 elementary schools in Oklahoma. Along with our donations of the Buddy Bench book, we aim to include our electronic curriculum which would allow teachers to incorporate the Buddy Bench concepts into everyday classroom practices. Our book will teach young children the importance of kindness, respect, diversity, and inclusion. We are working with Book Buddy Media to write, illustrate, and publish a hardcopy and a digital read-along version of our book.
Why do we need people to donate?
Oftentimes, students are able to recognize and intercept forms of bullying before an adult is even made aware of the situation. Research has shown that approximately 57% of the time, fellow students will mediate and diffuse bullying occurrences. With your support, we can bring our book to young children at elementary schools all across Oklahoma. The cost of publishing a children’s book can range anywhere from $10,000-$15,000. A simple donation of $10 will cover the printing, publishing, and shipping costs of one book to be sent to an elementary school in Oklahoma!
Whether you give or not, please SHARE this campaign with your social networks as a simple way we can all have a positive impact on inclusivity on the youth in Oklahoma.
Thank you for your support in helping us reach our goal!
