All of us at OU Student Media want to thank all of you for your support in this Thousands Strong campaign for student travel funds. We hit our $5,000 goal quickly and easily, and we managed to add nearly $1,000 more. That will go a long way toward getting OU Daily, Sooner yearbook and Student Media advertising students to news and training events in the months ahead. We're grateful, and our students are grateful. Support like this is one of the reasons we're among the top university student media programs in the nation.


It's not too late to contribute if you missed the opportunity. We're always grateful for financial assistance whenever you can give it. You can make a contribution at any time through the OU Foundation's donation page. Please designate Fund No. 32059, the Student Media Staff Development Fund. That fund gives us the most flexibility to use your gift wherever our students need it most.


Meanwhile, if you're a Student Media alum, mark your calendar. The evening of April 6, we're planning an alumni gathering at the National Weather Center on campus here in Norman. It will be an opportunity to meet up with your fellow alumni, and we'll also induct our second class into the OU Student Media Hall of Fame. We'll be sending more details in an email soon, and they'll also be posted on our website.

Can you push us closer to $8,000?

Our students are back from the Orange Bowl, and while it didn't go the way you and I hoped, our students covered it like total pros. You can see their work at


We quickly met our original $5,000 goal to raise money to help our students travel to news events and training opportunities. So we set a new, stretch goal of $8,000, thinking we'd win the Orange Bowl and use that enthusiasm to push our fundraising even higher. We didn't win, but you should still be enthusiastic about the terrific work our student journalists at OU Daily, Sooner yearbook and Crimson Quarterly magazine are doing to cover not just OU sports, but the dynamic new environment at OU under a new president. And you should also be enthusiastic about the fantastic work our OU Student Media advertising and marketing teams are doing to build revenue and audience around that work.


So ... won't you consider pushing us a little closer to that $8,000 stretch goal? We've got just two days left in the campaign. You may have already given, and if you have, we hope you'll at least share the story of why you supported us with your friends and former classmates on your social media streams, by email or just by word of mouth. One of the biggest challenges we have is just letting all the people who love OU Student Media know about the need and how they can help. With just two days to go, the sooner you can get the word out, the better.

Goal met already! Stretch goal: $8,000

A thousand thanks to all of you who have responded so quickly to our appeal for student travel funds here in Student Media. We planned this to last a month -- to take us through the College Football Championship in early January, where hope to see the Sooners and our OU Daily/Sooner yearbook coverage team. We got to the goal in less than a week!


So, we're announcing a stretch goal for this campaign: $8,000 by Jan. 11. If you know fans or alumni of Student Media who haven't yet contributed, we hope you'll remind them to do so. Proclaim your participation on your Facebook and Twitter streams. Share the link to our Thousands Strong page, and let folks know we're aiming for that $8,000.


Know that these funds do not just cover sports travel for OU Daily. First, Daily and Sooner increasingly cooperate on coverage. So those teams overlap, especially on visual storytelling and our new glossy magazine, Crimson Quarterly. Second, we use these funds to send many of our students -- from Daily, Sooner and the OU Student Media advertising team -- to training events and conferences, which take place all over the country. These events give our students a chance to see how all the best student media organizations in the country operate, and to showcase their work and talents, often in ways that potential employers will see. So the need is greater than $5,000. Every dollar we get over that original goal helps us give more of these opportunities to more of our students.

Choose a giving level


Gas Money

$5 will buy two gallons of gas for students making trips by car.


Uber Fare

$20 will help pay for ground transportation for a student at a bowl game or distant news event.


Checking a Bag

$50 will allow a student photographer to check a bag so she can carry her photo equipment onboard the plane.



$100 will cover most of the registration fee for one student at a training event.


Near the Action

$200 will cover one night at the official media or convention hotel, so our students can maximize their coverage and networking opportunities.



$500 can cover last-minute airfare for a student flying to cover a playoff game or breaking news event.



$1,000 will cover expenses for one student covering the Orange Bowl or the Championship, including airfare and a room at the official media hotel.
